About

  December 2009
Hello!

My name is George Johnson.  I'm a wheelchair user and for the last 17 years I have been actively involved with a local disability group based in Surrey.  Over those years I have been constantly frustrated by the lack of reliable and comprehensive sources of information. And even with the rapid development of the internet and the explosion of information, supposedly at you fingertips (or mouse click!) finding just the right information is still a time consuming and often confusing experience, with no guarantees...

George Johnson

So I decided it was time someone did something about it.

Disability Direct has no regional boundaries, no funding restrictions (even if funds themselves are limited) and does not rely on donations to survive, though if you would like to make a contribution it would be appreciated.

If you are involved in a local disability charity of voluntary organisation you, I'm sure, already have some understanding of the problems associated with regional funding, competition for funding and the difficulties that causes when it comes to sharing information with other organisations.

The aim of the site

Through this site I am working to bring together a searchable database of Charities, Organisations, Companies and Service Providers from all around the UK, to help disabled people, their families and health care providers, find just the right information and make contact with the people who can help them the most whatever their needs or aspirations.

It's not my intention to replace or necessarily duplicate the the valuable work of any organisation, merely bring it all together so that your clients and supporters can find you and the support, information and services you work so hard to provide.

So what's the next, er, step?

I need you, your charity, your voluntary organisation, your company to be included on the database.

If you're part of a charity or a voluntary or a not for profit organisation inclusion on the database is absolutely free.  Simply complete the online form on the Admin page. Or if you know of an organisation that might be interested please recommend them by using the form which is again also on the Admin Page.

**Now the directory is online, it is possible for those of you who are brave enough to enter your own information straight into the directory.  If you would like to do that please go to the main directory page and register for an account.  Please note that if you wish to have a free listing after registering please submit your organisations details using the 'Add Charity URL' link only.  Do not use the Premium link as you will then be taken to pages requesting payment, and you don't want to do that!

Of course any questions, comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you,

signed George Johnson
